After finishing uniting the entire country under his hands, King Gia Long ordered to rebuild Thang Long as it was not the capital of Dai Viet anymore but Hue instead. One of the most iconic symbols and witness of Thang Long or Hanoi nowadays for more than two hundred years is Flag Tower - a significant outpost that was designed with the influence of Vauban architectural style back then.

Hanoi Flag Tower is located at 28A Dien Bien Phu, Dien Ban ward, Ba Dinh district in Hanoi. This place used to be a part of Hoang Thanh of Thang Long or Hanoi nowadays. Considerably, Flag Tower in Hanoi was built in order to provide a watcher and served as an outpost for Bac Thanh during the reign of the Nguyen dynasty. Vauban style emphasizes most of the features that we can see around this site. To prevent invaders from attacking Hanoi, this tower can oversee and then alert guards to prepare a counterattack if necessary.

Flag Tower was an outpost for Bac Thanh (Hanoi back then) under the reign of the Nguyen dynasty. It took seven years to complete it and put it to use as a “stone guardian” for Hanoi. Hanoi Flag Tower is a direct witness of the first and the second invasion of the French Expeditionary Force during the end of the 19th century. Once again, after a few decades, this tower also witnessed the ceremony where President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence on September 2nd, 1945. Many years later, under the rapid and abominable bombing raids of USAF in Hanoi, Flag Tower acted like a stone camera that caught every glimpse of these horrible years. Because of that, this relic is the most memorable and most precious to anyone who was and is living in Hanoi nowadays.
