Tran Quoc Pagoda | 1500 Year old Pagoda In Hanoi - Travel Guide

Tran Quoc pagoda was built from 544 to 548 under the Ly dynasty – is considered the oldest pagoda in Hanoi and a symbol of Vietnamese Buddhism till now, at the beginning name Khai Quoc (mean national founder). In 1615 King Le Trung Hung moved from outside of the banks of Red River to inside on the Kim Ngu mound. Before building the dam name Cố Ngư now Thanh Niên Street, only one way to get to the pagoda is by boat. Then, in 1628, the Tran Quoc pagoda was renamed, which meant a place to help people dispel natural disasters and bring a peaceful life to the nation.

 

1. How to get Tran Quoc pagoda

Address: 46 Thanh Niên Street – Yên Phụ - Hanoi
This is the oldest pagoda in the Hanoi capital and an important religious center. This attracts many visitors every day, especially on the 1st and 15th of Luna month.

Just 4 km from Hanoi's old quarter, there are many different ways to get there. Visitors can walk combine with visit other famous places nearby such as Ho Chi Minh museum, President Palace, Quan Thanh Temple, etc. or you can go by taxi, also grab very cheap and convenient.

Another way visitors can catch bus route number 33 (Yen Nghia bus station - Xuan Dinh) or bus route number 50 (Long Bien - National Stadium) just 9000vnd (50 cents) for one way.

Every day from 08:00 – 11:30 and 13:30 – 16:00
Entrance fee: Free for everyone

3. Architecture of Tran Quoc Pagoda

Although it existed for a long time and underwent many events also restored many times. Tran Quoc Pagoda still does not lose the characteristics of Buddhist structural principles and architecture. Overall viewed from above, the pagoda is three main houses:

The highlights of the pagoda are Bảo Tháp Lục Độ Đài Sen tower was built in 1998 height of 15m, consisting of 11 floors together with 14 stealers recording the historical mark of the pagoda, bearing long-standing cultural values of Hanoi. At the top of the tower is a 9 - story lotus tower called Cửu Phẩm Liên Hoa, which enhances the majesty and holiness of the pagoda but still retains the softness of the overall architecture.
 
Besides that, visitors can see the Bodhi tree is donated by the President of India himself during a visit to Tran Quoc Pagoda on March 24, 1959.
The Ministry of Culture and Information was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic in 1962
In 2016, Tran Quoc Pagoda was honored, listed as one of 16 most beautiful pagoda in the world, voted by the Daily Mail magazine, and named the most beautiful ancient pagoda in Vietnam.

5. Best time to visit Tran Quoc pagoda

Visitors can come anytime during the day, walking around the peaceful lake to enjoy the fresh air and if you want to get the best photos you may come in the early morning or late afternoon to get the best photos of the sunset or sunrise in Hanoi. 

 

6. Tran Quoc pagoda dress code

  • Tank top and miniskirt not allowed, should take off the hat or umbrella inside sanctuary area.
  • Leave your shoes and sandals outside before entering any indoor area.
  • In particular, it is necessary to maintain general hygiene, leave garbage in the trash bin.
  • Photography is allowed, but be respectful. Visitors should not laugh and talk too loud in the statuary area.
  • Do not smoke in the worship area, do not touch artifacts, relics.
